BFSC Fundraising Volunteers Needed!

September 11, 2018

The Brookings Figure Skating Club will be replacing the Summer Arts Festival food booth with a new fundraiser this year.  BFSC skaters and family members (age 16 and older) will be staffing a concession stand at at least one SDSU athletic event, such as a football game, basketball game, or wrestling meet.

This will require a lot of help, but before you are able to participate, a volunteer packet that includes authorization to conduct a background check must be completed.  Click on the link below to download the form (separate forms are needed for each volunteer), complete it, and return it to Danna Groenewold, Jamie Schunk Rohlik, or the black BFSC drop box in the warming room.  This will be fun, so plan now to get involved!

Details for Glide & Slide: Try Figure Skating for FREE

September 10, 2018

FANTASTIC NEWS!!
We've already had overwhelming interest in this year's "Glide & Slide" try-it-FREE event, so we are making some adjustments to safely accommodate everyone.

There are currently about 100 people who have indicated that they are attending, or are interested in attending, the big event on September 23rd.  Wow, that is a lot of skaters!  How wonderful!

In order to give everyone the best experience, we'd like to divide the event into TWO groups:
One group will skate from 5:30-6:30pm, and the other group will skate from 6:30-7:30pm.  Please sign up for the slot that works best for you!

Guests who are not already members of the Brookings Figure Skating Club, please sign up for ONE time slot per child.  Click on the link below to go to the signup site.  Anyone who is not signed up in advance may be put on our waiting list and will be invited to skate if time/space allows.

(Skaters who are already members of the Brookings Figure Skating Club do not need to sign up here.  Instead, sign up to volunteer on a separate SignUpGenius link found on our group page)

If you need assistance with signing up, or if you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to call me.  Thanks!

2018-2019 Registration Update from BFSC Membership Chair Trish Matson Buus

August 19, 2018

Happy August, Brookings Figure Skating Club skaters and families! I hope you've all had a fantastic summer!

It's almost time to head back to school, which means another season of figure skating is just around the corner! After great new growth last season, I am very excited to get going this season and GROW even more!

Registration for the 2018-2019 season is now open! We are doing an Early-Bird Special again this year for all renewing Regular members... just $75 if your membership paperwork is completed and turned in by September 23rd (the date of our big try-it-free event! Have you RSVP'd yet? https://www.facebook.com/events/919138678258904/)

If you wait until after September 23rd, Regular member renewals will be $85. Brand new members pay just the $75 rate, no matter when they join this season, and Associate Memberships will remain $50.

You'll find everything you need on the "Join Us" page of the website. Just click here.

Be sure to note the link with the Membership Category Comparisons to check your selection. Additionally, a link to our club's Handbook can be found on that same page.

You may print off each page of the Membership Packet from that page. We do need each page filled out as much as possible. We are not accepting digital copies at this time. I will also have printed copies with me at all times once we're back on the ice, and I'll leave some in our club's drawer in the Warming Room at Larson Ice Rink, too.

I will be available at the following places and times so that anyone can stop by to fill out and/or turn in their membership paperwork to me personally. It's a great time to address any questions that you might have, too! Those opportunities are as follows:

1) Monday, August 20th from 12-1 pm in the cafeteria at Hy-Vee (pop in quick during your lunch break!)

2) Thursday, August 23rd from 6-7 pm at the Subway in Walmart (Brookings schools start on Friday, so you might be grabbing some last minute school supplies!)

We'll have pre-season ice available soon, so then you can just turn in your paperwork to me personally if I'm at the rink, or simply place the paperwork, with your checks, in an envelope in the black dropbox in the Warming Room.

As a reminder, you'll need to write two checks when you turn in Membership paperwork... one check is for the membership fee (ie $75 per skater if renewing by Sept 23), and the other check is for your Volunteer Program points deposit, postdated to August 10th of 2019. (see forms to help you figure your amount)

Please don't hesitate to ask any questions that you might have! Looking forward to seeing you all again soon!

Thanks!

BFSC Off-Season Ice Program; May Ice Times

April 29, 2018

From BFSC Summer Ice Coordinator Rebecca Barber:

Hello Club Members and Parents,

I wanted to get some information out clarifying the BFSC season and off-season ice times.

During the BFSC club season, which runs approximately mid-October through the end of the spring ice show, the club has a partnership relationship with Brookings Park and Rec department.  This partnership allows for use of designated Club ice time and the rehearsal schedule for the ice show.  These times are available to members as part of their yearly BFSC Membership.

When the show finishes, the "off-season", or "summer" season begins.  At this time, if the club wishes to have ice time for personal practice or lessons with private coaches, the club has to reserve time at the rate of about $150.00 an hour with taxes.  The BFSC Board recognizes the value that off-season ice time brings to its members.  Therefore, the club is willing to subsidize part of these fees.  But, BFSC still has to charge for skaters to use the ice, as the club does not do enough fundraising to cover the entire cost.  As the club grows and more and more skaters attend "off-season" ice sessions, the costs will begin to spread out and the club can charge less.  BFSC may also be able to offer more hours per week.

BFSC will have ice available on Thursday and Sundays from 6:45-7:45 pm starting May 3rd.

May 3

May 6

May 10

May 13

May 17

May 20

May 24

May 27 - Only if there are lots of skater requests

May 31

A June schedule will follow at the end of May.

Cost will be as follows:

  • BFSC Member:  $20/hour walk-on rate

  • Non-member (skaters from other clubs): $25/hour walk-on rate.

  • Due to the fact that the club is planning on this same schedule through the end of July, a punch card with 10 punches is available to BFSC members for $125 and to non-club members for $200.

Skaters can receive private lessons at this time from any BFSC coach member.  Other coaches may give lessons on ice by either paying the walk-on fee or by becoming a BFSC coach member.

Hopefully this clarifies some of the questions about our off-season.  Please email Rebecca Barber directly with any questions at beckabarber@hotmail.com.
